No Surprise: Beach Grooming Bad for the Environment

"Our research has found that southern California beaches harbor a rich, abundant, and productive community of invertebrate animals that are an important prey resource for shorebirds. A large fraction of these animals depend upon stranded kelp, algae and seagrass (wrack) produced by kelp forests and coastal reefs as their primary food source. Grooming removes this important food subsidy from the beach." Excerpt from "Summary of research results and current studies examining the effects of beach grooming on sandy beach habitats," prepared by Jenifer E. Dugan, Ph. D. (Assistant Research Biologist, Marine Science Institute, University of California, Santa Barbara).
