Sound from the Inside of a Large Shell

"A large shell held next to the ear doesn't transmit the sound of distant surf as legend says. What you hear is a roaring sound that is made by vibrations in the columns of air inside the shell. The vibrations are caused by your changing blood pressure as you hold the shell against your ear." - excerpt from the book, The Ocean Almanac, by Robert Hendrickson, Doubleday, 1984, pg. 377.
