New England Hurricane of 1938

"Long Island and New England -- September 17, 1938. A hurricane that hit Long Island, New York, and swept across all of New England with winds of up to 186 miles per hour brought with it tidal waves and caused extreme flooding that claimed many of the storm's 600 victims. In one Rhode Island hotel, everyone was killed when great waves burst through doors and windows. An 18-foot tidal wave roared ashore in Long Island." - excerpt from the book, The Ocean Almanac, by Robert Hendrickson, published by Doubleday, 1984, pg. 318.
