Moving Coastal Structures Inland

"This lesson of relocation seems to have been lost over the last century. People have even resisted the idea that a lighthouse can be moved using modern technology, as was the case with the famous Cape Hatteras lighthouse in North Carolina, which was successfully moved back from the eroding shore in 1999 to a distance equal to its original setback. The point is that if a substantial, tall structure like a lighthouse can be moved, then this approach can be considered first as a solution to the erosion "problem" for other structures." - excerpt from the book, Living with Florida's Atlantic Beaches, edited by Orrin H. Pilkey and William J. Neal, Duke University Press, 2004, pg. 22.
