What Happens When We Insist on Building Very Close to the Water's Edge

"Since we insist on building very close to the waters edge, beach erosion problems often prompt either expensive beach fill projects that may have unintended ecological consequences or ugly, beach-destroying seawalls or other structures. And with that loss of sand or a reliance on expensive, often overly-manicured imported sand, there may be a corresponding loss of habitat important for a wide range of species that use the land/sea interface provided by the beach for foraging and reproduction." - excerpt from the Introduction of Surfrider Foundation's STATE OF THE BEACH 2005 Report at http://www.surfrider.org/stateofthebeach/intro.asp
