U.S. Senate Bill Introduced to Improve Coastal Monitoring

"S.950 would authorize the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to coordinate a network of ocean observation and communication systems on our coastlines. The system would collect instantaneous data and information on ocean conditions including temperature, wave height, wind speed, currents, dissolved oxygen, salinity, and contaminants. This data would give instant information about ocean conditions and possible threats to coastal areas. It would also provide valuable data about long-term environmental changes including climate change and pollution levels." - excerpt from an email bulletin dated 5/16/07 from Senator Barbara Boxer of California.
