Floodwaters from Hurricane Harvey Loaded with E. coli

Tests of stagnant water in homes and structures, collected weeks after Hurricane Harvey caused massive stormwater releases in Houston, Texas, are showing high instances of E. coli and antibiotic resistant genes. Researchers believe high levels of E. coli are due to overflows of sewage treatment plants releasing untreated sewage into floodwaters. The finding of antibiotic resistant genes is also worrisome to the future of public health. Learn more from Rice University.
