California Voters and the Coastal Initiative

"In 1972, the voters of California approved Proposition 20, the Coastal Initiative, which led to the creation of the California Coastal Commission. Later, the California Coastal Act of 1976 established the Commission as a permanent state agency with a mission to protect, maintain, and enhance the quality of the coastal environment." (Excerpt from the Forward in the California Coastal Access Guide, from the California Coastal Commission, published by University of California Press, 1997)
