Algal Bloom

"The growth of phytoplankton is usually limited by the availability of nutrients. Nitrogen is the nutrient that is usually in the shortest supply. But if nitrogen becomes abundant, the growth of phytoplankton can increase dramatically. An explosive increase in the population of phytoplankton is known as an algal bloom." (Excerpt from the Pew Oceans Commission publication, "Marine Pollution in the United States," 2001, pg. ii)
