Texas claims to be the only state in the nation that has an Open Beaches Act. (Note: Oregon may argue this point.) As steward of state-owned lands, the Texas General Land Office (GLO) is responsible for managing the 367 miles of Texas coastline from the vegetation line on the beach to 10.3 miles into the Gulf of Mexico, as well as millions of acres of submerged land in our coastal bays. Many coastal programs stem from this basic responsibility and participation in the federal coastal zone management program through Texas’ Coastal Management Program (CMP).
The GLO Coastal Issues Website provides a wealth of information on beach access, water quality, and beach erosion, in addition to a large number of publications, maps and photos. The site is very well organized and easy to use.
Highlights of the information available from the GLO Coastal Issues site include:
- Grants and funding
- Photography and digital imagery of the Texas Coast
- Publications, maps and photos
- The Texas Beach and Bay Access Guide
- Coastal Erosion rate maps
- Texas Coastal Management Program
- CMP 2008 annual report
- Texas Coastal Connection
- Texas Beach Watch
- Coastal Erosion Planning and Response Program
The Texas Sea Grant College Program Website provdes links to a wide range of research, outreach and educational resources relating the the Texas coast.
