The term vegetation encompasses all the different species plants that grow from the high waterline to the back of the beach through the dunes. The plants on the coast hold sand in place with their roots and known, in some cases, to trap and accumulate sand around them. Different communities of plants exist at various distances from the water. In general, starting at the water and heading inland, you will encounter beach vegetation, foredune vegetation, and dune vegetation (which can be mixed with swale vegetation).
