Estuaries

"An estuary is an arm of the ocean that is thrust into the mouth and lower course of a river as far as the tide will take it. Every estuary has 3 main sections: The inland end, where the river enters, is called the head. The middle part is the fully etuarine area, where fresh water and salt water mix. The seaward end, at the indentation of the coastline where the ocean enters, is called the mouth." (Excerpt from the book, The Evolving Coast, by Richard A. Davis, Jr., published by Scientific American Library, 1997, pg. 103)
