- "Over half (54%) of the U.S. population lives on the 10% of land area defined as coastal. Between one-third and one-half of U.S. jobs are located in coastal areas. About one-third of the nation's Gross National Product is produced there through fishing, transportation, recreation and other industries dependent on healthy coastal ecosystems for growth and development."
