Changing Sex of Oysters

"Breeding habits of the Native Oyster involves a series of successive alternations of sex, each individual changing from male to female and back again several times during its lifetime. Some of those in the process of changing may be fully functioning hermaphrodites, operating for a short time as both male and female." (Excerpt from the book, Seashore Life of Southern California, by Sam Hinton, University of California Press, 1987, pg. 75)
