Removing One Fish Species Can Cause Big Chain Reactions

"The research showed that all fish species within a food web are connected with one another, and the removal of any one species can cause whole populations to break down," said Dr. Mark Hixon, Oregon State University professor of zoology, the study's lead author." (The study, published this week in a professional journal, the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences," was funded by a four year, $400,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, and also by the National Undersea Research Program of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
