Right Whale Survey Team Mourned
- As reported by the Endangered Species Coalition: The environmental community is mourning the loss of a right whale survey team in a plane crash off the coast of Florida on January 26. Described as "warriors in the quiet battle to save right whales from extinction," Emily Argo, Jackie Ciano, Michael Newcomer, and pilot Tom Hinds were gathering data and monitoring right whales in their only known calving grounds, pinpointing whale locations and reporting them to the Navy, which in turn would alert vessels in the area to divert course to reduce the chance of collisions. A memorial and wreath-floating service is planned for February 16 in Fernandina Beach, Florida. For more information http://www.wildlifetrust.org
