Male Elephant Seals Roam Far

"Scientists tracking parentage in southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) found that a single male could sire pups as far as 8,000 kilometers apart. Biologist Anna Fabiani of the University of Durham in the United Kingdom and colleagues took DNA samples from elephant seals on Antarctica and the tip of South America. They compared the samples to genetic information obtained from seal populations based elsewhere on Antarctica. The team's genetic analysis, reported in the journal Science, point to females sticking close to home, while males roam far and wide to father pups." - excerpt from Environmental News Network at http://www.enn.com/news/2003-02-27/s_2539.asp
