Huge Sewage Spills in Baltimore
- "A major sewage spill, estimated at 30 million gallons, occurred in late February 2003 in Northeast Baltimore when a sewer line blockage sent raw sewage spilling out of a manhole. Health warnings were posted along a six-mile stretch of Herring Run, which flows into the Back River near Essex. The spill occurred nearly a year after the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit that said Baltimore repeatedly violated the Clean Water Act by discharging more than 100 million gallons of sewage in the past six years. The settlement requires the city to make an estimated $940 million in repairs over 14 years and also assessed the city a $600,000 fine." - (source: "Raw Sewage Pours into Herring Run" by Johnathon E.
