Internal Waves
- "Some scientists believe that underwater or "internal" waves, probably produced when tidal currents plunge into deep water through a narrow passage between 2 islands flanking the sea, can cause a submarine to drop as much as 300 feet and then lift it back again. This, they propose, may account for mysterious submarine losses, such as the 1963 loss of the nuclear submarine Thresher with its crew of 129 in the Gulf of Maru." - excerpt from The Ocean Almanac, by Robert Hendrickson, Doubleday Dell Publishing, 1984, pg. 294.
