Surfrider Foundation Recommendations for the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy
- Please support a comprehensive revision of our coastal and ocean resource management that works from an ecosystem perspective and includes: 1. Identifying and protecting shoreline and marine habitat critical to healthy coastal and ocean ecosystems; 2. The establishment of a scientifically-based network of marine reserves and other marine protected areas; 3. Stricter controls on coastal development, to minimize habitat damage and water quality impairment; 4. Ensuring public access to healthy coasts and oceans; 5. Strengthening and expanding pollution laws that protect habitat, wildlife, and people from harmful pollution; 6. Redirecting government programs and subsidies away from harmful coastal development and toward beneficial activities, including restoration. ***Take action on this issue at http://actionnetwork.org/campaign/ocean_commission
