Big South Swell Pounds Southern California

"A South swell of 5 feet with a period of 18 seconds has arrived. This will cause surf heights between 5 and 8 feet on exposed southwest facing beaches... with infrequent sets near 10 feet. This swell will continue through Thursday morning before dropping significantly. Surfers are advised that the surf will be strong enough to easily break boards and leashes. In addition to strong rip currents... strong littoral currents setting towards the North will be present. These will be feeding into the rip currents. If you get caught in a rip current... the best course of action is to let it carry you out to sea... then swim back in through the surf zone. Conserve your strength by body surfing or letting the White Water push you towards shore. Be prepared for a strong side current near the beach. Mariners entering and exiting San Diego Bay... Oceanside Harbor... Dana Point Marina... and Newport Bay... may encounter breaking waves around the times of low tide." - National Weather Service surf advisory for April 27, 2004.
