Bad Beach Fill Pollutes the Local Marine Environment in Florida

The problem with these re-nourishment sands is that they have nothing to do with native beach sand and will not survive there. As you can see on the diagrams the beach fill has a huge amount of material that is finer than 250 microns, but coarser than 62 microns. This is also material that will move quickly off of the beach (an economic waste) and pollute the adjacent marine environment. - excerpt from Dr. Hal Wanless, Chair of the University of Miami's Geological Science Department. Quote appeared in the Surfrider Foundation Palm Beach County Chapter press release from 3/30/2006.
