Coastal Armoring Is Not the Solution
- "Hurricanes Hugo (1989, South Carolina), Opal (1995, Florida Panhandle), and Fran (1996, North Carolina) proved the effectiveness of high, wide dunes in preventing or reducing property damage. In contrast, coastal armoring failed to provide equivalent protection in all three cases; the walls were overtopped or breached and became part of the damage statistics." - excerpt from the book, Living with Florida's Atlantic Beaches, edited by Orrin H. Pilkey and William J. Neal, Duke University Press, 2004, pg. 123.
