Fires in the Northwest Threaten Water Quality
- A recent article from Oregon Public Broadcasting warns of the Eagle Creek Fire, currently burning over 48,000 acres in the Northwest, and its threat to local water quality. Fires weaken the ability of trees and soil to naturally filter rain water in the Bull Run watershed, the main drinking water source for Portland. Additionally, fire fighters may revert to dropping fire retardant if flames cannot be controlled. Fire retardant is a fertilizer mix of ammonium compounds, which could directly impact water quality and harm fish populations.
