"In 1776, the 'Turtle', designed by an American student, went into action in New York Harbor during the American Revolution. This early submarine was operated by one person. The propellers were turned by a hand crank." - excerpt from the book, The Kingfisher Young People's Book of Oceans, by David Lambert, published by Scholastic, Inc., 1997, pg. 75
