NOAA's Addressing the Marine Debris Problem in Hawaii

"NOAA has made a commitment to the people of Hawaii to seriously address the issue of marine debris, both through identification and removal, as well as through education and public awareness of this critical issue impacting the health of the Hawaiian ecosystem. We have had a longstanding effort in the areas around the recently designated Northwestern Hawaiian Islands National Monument, and are now looking to address the issue in the main islands as well." - quote from retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Jr., Ph.D, undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator, appearing on this NOAA web page.
