Proper Coastal Planning Takes Foresight

"Shoreline stabilization is a difficult political issue. Seawalls may take as long as five or six decades to destroy beaches, although it usually takes only one to three decades for the beach to erode to the point where it is entirely gone at mid-to-high tide. Thus it takes a politician with some foresight to endorse prohibition of armoring." - excerpt from the chapter, "The Fortified Coast: Living with Coastal Engineering," in the book, Living with Florida's Atlantic Beaches, Duke University Press, 2004, pg. 80. The book is part of the Living with the Shore series edited by Orrin H. Pilkey and William J. Neal.
