Groins at the Beach Cause Lots of Problems

"Usually, groins cause more problems than they cure. They aren't much to look at and they make long walks along an unobstructed beach a thing of the past. On beaches with any kind of surf, they pose a potentially serious hazard to swimmers. And they leave property owners downdrift bereft of sand." (Excerpt from Against the Tide, by Cornelia Dean, Columbia University Press, 1999, pg. 44)
