The Jet Ski, Spewing Nauseating Fumes Since 1970
- "...the jet ski, which would make its debut in California in 1970. That was when an American named Clay Jacobson had the idea of combining the motorcycle with the water ski... He sold his design to Kawasaki, the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer, and in 1973 the mass-produced jet ski was launched. The silence of the sea was shattered at resorts on both coasts of the United States, as hundreds of thousands of these brilliantly colored hydro-jets plowed through the waves, spewing nauseating fumes and running over unsuspecting swimmers." - excerpt from the book, The Beach: The History of Paradise on Earth, by Lena Lencek and Gideon Bosker, published by Viking Penguin, 1998, pg. 180.
