Staghorn and Elkhorn Corals To Be Proposed For Listing Under U.S. Endangered Species Act

"The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has proposed the first listing of any coral species under the federal Endangered Species Act. Speaking at the 13th biannual meeting of the Coral Reef Task Force in Washington, D.C., in March, NOAA's Deputy Assistant Secretary for Oceans and Atmosphere Timothy Keeney announced that the agency would propose the listing of staghorn and elkhorn corals, two species native to Florida and the Caribbean." - excerpt from http://www.seaweb.org/resources/86update/86update_listserv.html#2. Elkhorn coral reefs are present in the new marine reserve in Tres Palmas, Puerto Rico that Surfrider Foundation helped establish (see http://www.surfrider.org/rincon)
