The Glottal Stop and Macron in the Hawaiian Language
- "The glottal stop, which is indicated by the single open quote mark ('), represents a whole letter in the Hawaiian alphabet; thus, it takes up one letter space. The macron, a horizontal line over a vowel, indicates the vowel is longer than a vowel without a macron." - excerpt from the book, Atlas of Hawai'i, Third Edition, edited by Sonia and James Juvik, University of Hawai'i Press, copyright 1998, pg. 26.
